layering a BLT

Let's talk about one of the the basic elements of a good sandwich. Layering. What goes on first? The lettuce? The tomato? The bacon? So many choices! Well, if you are my mom it is the tomato. She is a firm believer in the tomato as the foundation of the sandwich. For a long time I thought she was crazy ("my mom puts a tomato on first. how could she?") I was a strong believer in the bacon as the base layer and taking it from there. Actually, that is not true. After the bacon must come the lettuce, followed by the tomato. It just makes sense. {B.(bacon)L.(lettuce)T.(tomato), duh} However, this clearly was not a nurtured behavior. After all, my mom was the only person I watched making sandwiches as a child. And I always ate her tomato-first sandwiches. So what gives? Could it be genetic? Did I grow into this trait with age? Does anyone else in my family possess this trait? If my dad were to ever make a BLT, what would he do?

Note: My dad can make a great peanut butter sandwich coupled with a tall glass of milk, but BLT goes juuuust beyond his limits.

Stuck in my ways, it took me years to accept my mother's sandwiches. However, in recent years, as I have begun to stear clear from excess amounts of meat in my diet, I can see the value in tomato touching bottom layer of bread. In fact, it's quite good. Take a simple tomato, mayo and salt sandwich. mmm. Perhaps what really has happened is that I have come to appreciate the tomato more. Basically, it all comes down to what you want to hit your taste buds first. If your sandwich is all about the bacon, bacon goes first. Hands down. And Mom, if you are making a BLT, isn't it always about the bacon?

  1. It seems to me like you're really into sandwiches. Is this true? ;-)
